On January 14, 2025, American Security Project sponsored POLITICO Playbook: The First 100 Days, where Congressional leaders, policy experts, and top political power players joined top reporters from POLITICO’s newsroom for a morning of candid conversations and exclusive insights into Donald Trump’s second presidency.

AI Imperative 2030 Director Courtney Manning presented executive remarks at the summit, where she stressed the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to address global challenges and its potentially catastrophic risks when used by malicious actors. She emphasized the urgency for U.S. leadership in global AI development to counter China’s AI-empowered authoritarianism and territorial encroachment. She highlighted how AI Imperative 2030 aims to unify the diverse perspectives around AI governance and build a clear path toward a central coordinating mechanism for emerging technology policy. This was followed by an announcement of the initiative’s first report on how the U.S. can secure critical technological resources like energy, compute, and chips. Underscoring AI’s role as a tool for progress and a reflection of human values, she urged policymakers to ensure that its development aligns with the American principles of democracy, resilience, and freedom.

After introductory remarks, a panel comprised of Hon. Nazak Nikakhtar, Chair of National Security at Wiley Rein LLP, Sen. John Curtis, (R-Utah), Rep. Ami Bera, (D-Calif.), and Chris Lehane, Vice President of Global Affairs at OpenAI sat down with Steven Overly, Host of the POLITICO Tech Podcast to discuss the most pressing issues facing the Trump administration in regards to AI governance and investment. The event was followed by a private reception at Union Hall attended by over 300 legislators, journalists, and technology policy experts from across the Washington, DC region.
